The National Archives: Education: British Empire ”The history of the British empire is a British story and a world story. For the last 400 years Britain has played a key role in the world – mainly because of its empire. In this exhibition you are going to look at how and why the empire made Britain so important. We haven’t tried to study all aspects of the empire, because it was so huge and lasted so long. Instead, we have provided some information and original sources that will give you an outline understanding of the empire.”
The British Empire This site has been developed by a teacher in the UK, Stephen Luscombe. It has a wealth of information but use it cautiously as some of the information does not cite sources. The articles that do have a bibliography or a list of references have some very good links.

An annotated bibliography is a very useful tool, both for students and for teachers. The word “annotated” should be familiar to you. When you “annotate” something you are adding notes to it to give an explanation or comment. An annotated bibliography, therefore, is a regular bibliography (or, in our case, an MLA-formatted Works Cited) with an explanation for each of the entries you create.

Writing an annotated bibliography helps you evaluate the usefulness of the sources you read or selected and it helps your teacher(s) see whether you are keeping up with your research, selecting useful resources and thinking critically about what you’re reading.

IBMYP Humanities classes ask you to examine the origin, purpose, value and limitations of the sources that you select. That’s why we want you to consider these aspects of each of your sources when you complete your annotated bibliography for any research assignment at IST. Here are some questions to consider when you look at these four aspects of each resource:

Origin Who wrote it? When was it written? Who published it?

Purpose Why was it written? For whom? Was it written to educate? Was it written to inform? Was it written to persuade? What does the form of the document or article tell you about its purpose?

Value Is it a primary or secondary source? Does it give an interesting or unique perspective? Is it background information? How can you use the information in this source to answer your research question?

Limitation(s) Does it list its sources? Do you have to cross-reference information? Does it give only a very general overview? Do you question any of the contents?

Okay, now you know what you have to do, but how do you do it?

Creating an annotated bibliography is very straightforward. With an EasyBib account, you can create a project for your research assignment and easily create your bibliography along with annotations. EasyBib saves your work and when you’re finished, you can export a (mostly) properly formatted and annotated MLA Works Cited in MSWord. EasyBib is not perfect, however. You always need to proofread and double-check to be sure that the formatting is correct. NoodleTools offers something similar. You have to do a bit more of the work but there are likely to be fewer errors.

Here’s a short (two-entry) sample that I created for Grade 10 a couple of years ago. Feel free to use this as your template (as it’s already properly formatted to meet MLA standards) by renaming it when you “Save As”–making sure to name it in a way that your teacher will know what it is and whose it is. You can follow the naming pattern that I used in this document: name_task_grade_class.doc Surridge_annotatedbib_sample

For further information on creating an annotated bibliography or other writing guidelines or support, you can visit the Purdue OWL (Online Writing Lab) designed for students of Grades 7 to 12.

Most of the information you will need to complete this task is outlined below:

Read sample Grade 10 science essays from previous years. Looking at examples helps you understand what Mr. Essis expects and also helps you see what a good science essay looks like. There are also science essays in the first two editions of The Writer’s INK (available for check out from the library and available in your science classrooms).
Gr10Science_sample1 Gr10Science_sample2

Resources for finding information relevant to your chosen topic (including images) are listed below. You should go beyond these resources but remember to choose sources that are reliable. If you are unsure, check with Ms. Surridge or Mr. Essis to be sure.

Here is a handout to help you with your note-taking for this assignment.
cornell_template_IST_research

Set up your account with EasyBib, create a “project” for this essay and remember to add each of the sources that you use.

For details on MLA formatting, visit the Purdue University Online Writing Lab (OWL).

Here is the link to the OWL Annotated Bibliography information.

Click here for advice on how to create an outline for your essay before you write your first draft. Or, use “Notebook” option in your project in EasyBib. This will allow you to take notes and organize them.

Don’t forget to visit The Writing Center with your draft. Reading your paper aloud and having a knowledgeable and helpful audience can be very beneficial. You should be visiting The Writing Center at lunch or after school before Tuesday, October 23.

Use turnitin.com to help you avoid plagiarism. Mr. Essis will set up an account for this assignment and share the login details with you.

Your essay must be in MLA format. Click here to see an example of an MLA-formatted paper.

To many of you, the word “specifications” might be new. Those of you who have taken Design Technology with Mr. Baxter will be more familiar with this word. The best way to think of it is as criteria that you write together with your supervisor.

Here is one example of specifications to describe a product that is a digital story:

Check back here later this week and I will share some other examples from Mr. Baxter’s DT class.

It is really important that you write your specifications in your process journal. This can take the form of a table which might look something like this:

Topic

Goal

AOI

Audience

Research question(s)

Specifications

Tap dancing

To teach a class to beginners

Health and social education

Ages 10-12

What are the best techniques for teaching 10-12 year olds?

What are the best methods for teaching tap dancing?

(How will I know that I’ve been successful?)

Students can perform a short dance (2 to 4 minutes) in unison and using the techniques I’ve taught them.

Students will show interest and enthusiasm for tap dancing.

Final performance will be well-choreographed and engaging and set to appropriate music.

Today, I’ve provided a list with a few things to remind you of what’s coming up, some samples and some links to other resources.

Keep up with the timeline. In case you’ve forgotten, here it is (with some notes about where you should be now):

Begin your Personal Project process journal, if you have not already done so. Remember, this can take many forms including a blog, website, digital folder, or a standard notebook. Here are two pages from a previous students’ Personal Project journal.

Set a goal. In order to do this, you need to think about your audience. Here are some things to consider:

Who do you want to reach out to? If your goal is to inform children, your language and method of presentation will be very different than if you have targeted an audience of teens or adults. This is a very important consideration when goal-setting.

What medium (for example, film, audio, visual, oral) is best suited for reaching this audience?

What resources are available to you? What research do you have to do in order to better understand your audience and their needs?

What teacher(s) or community members might best support you and help you to achieve your goal? Would one of these people be a good choice of supervisor?

That’s all for today. Be sure to use your handbook, keep an eye on the timeline and have a clear goal in mind by the end of this week.

Here is a list of Library OPAC databases you can use to research Greek Myth:

1. BrainPop: username istianjin password welcome Introductory and basic secondary source

You might want to start with this simple but enteraining introduction brought to you by Tim and Moby. After you log in, search “Greek Gods” and watch the short video for very basic introductory information. You can click on the “CC” to see the English subtitles while you watch.

2. Oxford Reference Online: username istianjin password welcome Advanced source with primary source material in most entries

One of the resources in the Oxford Reference Online database is the Oxford Companion to World Mythology. After you’ve logged in to this database, search for the Greek god or goddess that you are researching or, if you haven’t chosen yet, search for “Greek mythology” to do some background reading see links to many other entries.

3. Britannica School Edition: username isstjboliq password istianjin2011 Intermediate source with images and video

When you use Britannica, you should be choosing the Middle School version. Search for “Greek religion” and you’ll find an article with links to other useful entries.

4. Student Resources in Context: username istianjin Useful for learning about your chosen topic in the news and media today

This database is a bit confusing to use so you might want to ask for some help. If you search for the name of a god or goddess, you will then be able to narrow your search by “Content Types” on the left-hand side of the window. This will be a very useful resource but needs a bit of practise to navigate. We will look at it together in class.

Here are a couple of web sites that have been approved by your teachers:

1. Encyclopedia Mythica has a Greek Mythology sections with introductory information on all of the principal gods and goddesses. This site contains very clear family trees to help you better understand the relationships between the gods and goddesses. There are also one-page entries on most of the characters who appear in Greek myth. Intermediate

2. Theio Greek Mythology has a wide variety of introductory information on the myths and the gods. This site is most useful for the wide selection of images of the gods and goddesses depicted in art. Introductory

Here is the task sheet you were given by Mr. Fortin Medical Physics Essay Instruction Sheet.

Read sample Grade 10 science essays from previous years. Looking at examples helps you understand what Mr. Fortin expects and also helps you see what a good science essay looks like.
Gr10Science_sample1 Gr10Science_sample2

Resources for finding information relevant to your chosen topic (including images) are listed below. You should go beyond these resources but remember to choose sources that are reliable. If you are unsure, check with Ms. Surridge or Mr. Fortin to be sure.

Here is a handout to help you with your note-taking for this assignment.

Use turnitin.com to help you avoid plagiarism.

This is a search engine that searches comparisons for you. Enter “nuclear” as your search term and select comparisons (above I’ve chosen “good” and “bad”). Then lists of relevant websites appear under the “good” and “bad” columns. Of course, you can choose other comparison terms. You might also limit your search by using “nuclear energy” or “nuclear power” instead of only “nuclear”.

Once you have registered, you have access to all that EasyBib schools’ edition has to offer. Once you’ve created your account at school, you will have full access from home as well.

Projects You can create projects and save all of your citations, notes, outlines and annotations together in one place.

Notebook Within a project, you can create as many notes as you need for every source you use. These can include bullet-point notes, quotations and paraphrasing. Cards can be colour-coded, sorted and resorted as often as you want or need. Also in the Notebook view, you can create an outline of a project. Notes can be dragged to a point in the outline and the contents of the note will automatically be added to the project outline.

Bibliography EasyBib will now save all of your citations and annotations. You can select the ones to publish in a bibliography and quickly save it in a properly MLA-formatted, alphabetized MSWord document.

Your essay will be

500 to 750 words

based on your research notes taken from ABC-Clio readings and other library databases and print resources notetaking_templateIST

Your starting point will be ABC-Clio. (Username: tianjin Password: welcome)
I have created a research list of 4 articles that you must read before you decide on your topic and continue to research. Once you have logged in to ABC-Clio, choose “Issues” and go to “Research List” in the upper-righthand corner.

Other databases that will be of use are:

Brain Pop (Username: istianjin Password: welcome) Log in and choose “Science.” There are several topic areas connected to your research. All English B Standard and EAP students should start with BrainPop. Remember to turn on the subtitles (CC).

Infobase Learning (formerly Facts on File) (Username: istianjin Password: welcome) Log on and choose “Science Online”:

For print resources (books and magazines), we have pulled out the books that we think will be most useful. All of these titles are also available on a “Resource List” in the IST Library OPAC. To connect to the OPAC, click on the “Home” or “School” link to the right of this post.
