The National Archives: Education: British Empire ”The history of the British empire is a British story and a world story. We haven’t tried to study all aspects of the empire, because it was so huge and lasted so long. Instead, we have provided some information and original sources that will give you an outline understanding of the empire.”
The British Empire This site has been developed by a teacher in the UK, Stephen Luscombe. It has a wealth of information but use it cautiously as some of the information does not cite sources. The articles that do have a bibliography or a list of references have some very good links.

Writing an annotated bibliography helps you evaluate the usefulness of the sources you read or selected and it helps your teacher(s) see whether you are keeping up with your research, selecting useful resources and thinking critically about what you’re reading.

IBMYP Humanities classes ask you to examine the origin, purpose, value and limitations of the sources that you select. That’s why we want you to consider these aspects of each of your sources when you complete your annotated bibliography for any research assignment at IST. Here are some questions to consider when you look at these four aspects of each resource:

Origin Who wrote it? When was it written? Who published it?

Purpose Why was it written? For whom? Was it written to educate? Was it written to inform? Was it written to persuade? What does the form of the document or article tell you about its purpose?

Value Is it a primary or secondary source? Does it give an interesting or unique perspective? Is it background information? How can you use the information in this source to answer your research question?

Limitation(s) Does it list its sources? Do you have to cross-reference information? Does it give only a very general overview? Do you question any of the contents?

Okay, now you know what you have to do, but how do you do it?

Creating an annotated bibliography is very straightforward. With an EasyBib account, you can create a project for your research assignment and easily create your bibliography along with annotations. EasyBib saves your work and when you’re finished, you can export a (mostly) properly formatted and annotated MLA Works Cited in MSWord. EasyBib is not perfect, however. You always need to proofread and double-check to be sure that the formatting is correct. NoodleTools offers something similar. You have to do a bit more of the work but there are likely to be fewer errors.

Here’s a short (two-entry) sample that I created for Grade 10 a couple of years ago. Feel free to use this as your template (as it’s already properly formatted to meet MLA standards) by renaming it when you “Save As”–making sure to name it in a way that your teacher will know what it is and whose it is. For further information on creating an annotated bibliography or other writing guidelines or support, you can visit the Purdue OWL (Online Writing Lab) designed for students of Grades 7 to 12.

It is really important that you write your specifications in your process journal. This can take the form of a table which might look something like this:

1. Keep up with the timeline. In case you’ve forgotten, here it is (with some notes about where you should be now):
   
2. Begin your Personal Project process journal, if you have not already done so. Remember, this can take many forms including a blog, website, digital folder, or a standard notebook. Here are two pages from a previous students’ Personal Project journal.
3. Set a goal. In order to do this, you need to think about your audience. Here are some things to consider:

• Who do you want to reach out to? If your goal is to inform children, your language and method of presentation will be very different than if you have targeted an audience of teens or adults. This is a very important consideration when goal-setting.
• What medium (for example, film, audio, visual, oral) is best suited for reaching this audience?
• What resources are available to you? What research do you have to do in order to better understand your audience and their needs?
• What teacher(s) or community members might best support you and help you to achieve your goal? Would one of these people be a good choice of supervisor?

You might want to start with this simple but enteraining introduction brought to you by Tim and Moby. After you log in, search “Greek Gods” and watch the short video for very basic introductory information. You can click on the “CC” to see the English subtitles while you watch.

One of the resources in the Oxford Reference Online database is the Oxford Companion to World Mythology. After you’ve logged in to this database, search for the Greek god or goddess that you are researching or, if you haven’t chosen yet, search for “Greek mythology” to do some background reading see links to many other entries.

When you use Britannica, you should be choosing the Middle School version. Search for “Greek religion” and you’ll find an article with links to other useful entries.

4. Student Resources in Context: username istianjin Useful for learning about your chosen topic in the news and media today

This database is a bit confusing to use so you might want to ask for some help. If you search for the name of a god or goddess, you will then be able to narrow your search by “Content Types” on the left-hand side of the window. This will be a very useful resource but needs a bit of practise to navigate. We will look at it together in class.

1. Encyclopedia Mythica has a Greek Mythology sections with introductory information on all of the principal gods and goddesses. This site contains very clear family trees to help you better understand the relationships between the gods and goddesses.
