Why You Can Write Titles That Grab Attention

The following is a guest post by our IT Coordinator, Tod Baker. Mr. Baker gave us a session last week on how to write engaging titles because our first titles were rather boring. Thanks, Mr. Baker, for the session and the guest post!

Great blog post titles make it difficult for readers to walk away without reading the posts.

You can write titles that get people to read your posts. Here’s how.

Key Words
Use key words to get a reader’s attention. If you are writing about an international cookbook, then consider specific words that relate to that topic like yummy, recipe, delicous and food. Look at this title.

“Why Rice Krispie Treats Taste Yummy”

Do you see how the key words make that title tasty?

Start With ‘Why’
Use curiosity to pull them in. Titles that begin with ‘why’ create curiosity in readers. To satisfy their curiosity, they will feel compelled to read your post. If you read the following title, wouldn’t you want to read on to find out why?

“Why The Friendship Group Feels Good”

When you write your next post title, give “why” a try.

Put a Verb In It
Action words make titles interesting. And they help tell your story. I really like the previous title on this blog.

“Cookbook Group Learns 3 Things”

It’s informative and the word ‘learns’ gives it some punch. And there’s a little mystery in the title. I don’t know what they have learned, so I must read on to find out. Thanks to the title, there is no way I’m going to walk away from that post without reading it.

You can do this. In fact, you have already written a handful of great titles. Well done! Give these techniques a try and see how they pull readers into your posts. But these are not the only ways to write effective titles. Share your tips in the comments.

  1. Ok, OK my turn!
    1. Why you should spend to save
    2. Buterflies mutations
    3. Why you should watch TV
(Please note none of these are real!)
    Do you like them?

  2. I like the way you used the unusual to grab attention. It works!
