Flip the Pages in the New Student Handbook

The Student Handbook Group is preparing a new Student Handbook for the 2012-2013 school year. This handbook will be distributed to new students to IST starting in August.

The new Student Handbook group are working well. They made a list of topics to divide their work. They had trouble to agree on the layout but they talked it out.  They are learning how to get along.

The Student Handbook Group is Taylor, Isabella, Libby, Kristina and In Seon.

The group is very organized. They divided their topics in 4 sections and about  25 sub sections. The 4 sections are How To’s, Places, Teachers and Fun Stuff. They first write each sub section on Microsoft Word, then the copy and paste it into a Pages document. They will include lots of photos to help new ESL students. As you can see, they have worked very efficiently.

They are creating the handbook on Pages. Pages is an Apple program that lets you use lots of different templates. The Student Handbook group choose Pages because the templates make it easier to have cleverly designed text boxes and colorful layouts. They choose a “newsletter” template for their pages. They are working on the library MacBooks and are becoming very skilled with the program.

The Handbook is almost finished. A few of the writers are done with their sections and only need to edit them. Their draft is due on the day we return from the April break. Ms. Nicol and Mr. Moody will be writing introductions to the handbook as the elementary principal and the school director. We’re looking forward to seeing the final document!

Growing Roots and Shoots

The Environment Group aims to educate students at IST on ways to help the environment.

The final project for the Environment Group is to innovate the Roots and Shoots Club at IST. There used to be a Roots and Shoots but it stopped when Ms. Tung left IST two years ago. Mr. Watson is the new ESD coordinator and they will work with him.

The Environment Group is learning how you can make a difference in the world. They are starting Roots and Shoots again to teach the students at IST how to save the environment and nature. Their best source has been the Hong Kong Roots and Shoots website. It gives very good information on how Roots and Shoots works.

Ms. Wretham is working with the environment group.

What do you think should be the first project for our new Roots and Shoots at IST? Leave your answers in the comments.

Roots N’ Shoots are Helping the Enviroment

The Environment Group aims to educate students at IST on ways to help the environment.

The Environment group at IST wants to know what IST might look like if people keep on littering within the community. They want to reactivate the IST Roots N’ Shoots Club, and make it more fun and exciting so students can get more involved. They also want the Roots & Shoots to be a big part of the IST community so they can make a better world.  Stay in touch because they’ll soon have an IST Roots N’ Shoots website.

The Environment Group has learned a lot so far about deforestation, organic farming and how the whole system of learning works.  They have also learned about the Compass graphic organizer. This helps people think about different aspects of a problem: Nature, Economy, Well being and Society. Thinking of these four aspects helped the Environment Group to organize their things and it also made them think a lot. Their most useful resource has been their exhibition journal because it helps them keep track of information and the time they are spending. They had a lot of help from books and websites and their mentors also helped them a lot.

The group had some problems working. Sometimes they were working usefully but sometimes they waste a lot of time doing nothing. One of their members was absent for a few days and that was difficult too. Thankfully, they are now back on track and they started a lunch time activity for elementary students on Earth Day. It will meet weekly on Fridays.
