Humanities students in the sixth grade will explore a variety of exciting and interesting topics. They will also learn some very important academic skills such as effective note taking and paraphrasing techniques that will assist them throughout their secondary school career.

 

Unit: Prehistoric Developments – A brief introduction to the foundations of human culture from Australopithecines to Homo Sapiens, hunter gatherers to agrarian society.

Field Trip: Trip to Peking Man site at Zhou Kou Dian

Significant Unit Assessment: Students will prepare an annotated timeline that is research based and includes original text and graphics/images.

  • Specified word count for annotations
  • Specified graphic quality/detail
  • Clearly established research parameters (see Research Guidelines)
  • Detailed time divisions (by era, century, decade, year, etc.)
  • Bibliography in standard MLA format

 

Unit: Introduction to Geography – (Maps) An introduction to simple maps, mapping keys, geography concepts and different types of maps

Field trip: “Surveying” a local park or natural site and developing a map for it.

Significant Unit Assessment: Unit Exam – Students will respond to questions about a visual stimulus (map, chart, etc) and draw comparative conclusion. Short answers in complete sentences.

 

Unit: Ancient China– An introduction to Chinese civilization beginning with the Zhou dynasty and continuing through to the Han and later Tang dynasties

Significant Unit Assessment: Information Report – 500 words or five paragraphs, Topic statements supported by details from research, Bibliography, Standard MLA format

Unit: Our Dynamic Earth – A look at some of the exciting processes that change and shape our earth, from weather to simple tectonics and other geological forces

Significant Unit Assessment: Oral presentation that adheres to the following structure:

  • Group/pair presentation
  • Appropriate eye contact
  • Proper posture
  • Proper voice projection
  • Clarity and accuracy of language (English mechanics and grammar)
  • Must clearly communicate key words, main ideas, and simple conclusions
  • Glossary provided to students by teacher
  • Bibliography in standard MLA format
  • Presented to an audience of peers
  • Students should use note cards while presenting
