What’s Happening in Grade 2?

We Have Been learning…

We have continued with our UOI on Systems. Last week we read a story called ‘Dave the Potter’ which told the story of a man who made pottery. It was a great read aloud! Then we looked at some pots that Ms. Ashton bought in to show us. These pots were old and had stuck to the saggers they were placed in before they were fired in the kiln. Saggers are big rough clay pots that protect the unfired clay pots from ash and prevent it from losing its shape in the kiln. We hope you enjoy the pictures.

Library

Due to Water Fun Day we will be having library on Wednesday morning this week.  It will be the last time students can checkout for the year. Please ensure your child returns all library books this week.

Up and Coming…

Spring Show

This Monday and (possibly) Tuesday, students will have a dress rehearsal for the Spring Show which is this Wednesday 22nd May. A reminder that costumes are full length jeans and a bright t-shirt/top. Grade 2 students will need to meet us in the classrooms at 6:00pm on Wednesday wearing their jeans and shirt. The boys will need to go to the 2H room and the girls to the 2A room. Students will be supplied with vests (boys) and sequin tops (girls).

Thursday Night Live

This Thursday evening marks the final Thursday Night Live for the year. It is being dedicated to a former teacher John Fortin who is currently quite sick. Please come along and help raise money for John’s treatment. There are buses going to the school from Ao Cheng and Lake Park. Please see the poster below for further details.

Water Fun Day

This Friday 24th May 1:30pm is Water Fun Day! Please send your child’s swimming costume to school with them. Children are not to come to school dressed in their swimming attire. Students are advised to bring swimmers, hat, sunscreen, towel, shoes that can get wet and a plastic bag. Students will be changing into out of their school clothes after lunch.

Look What’s Happening in Grade 2

We have been busy in Grade 2!

Jack the Cheetah has arrived. We opened up our adoption kit from WWF and  welcomed our new edition to Grade 2. In our kit was a stuffed toy cheetah, an adoption certificate and a photo of a cheetah. Students spent the week creating a habitat in the shared room and Jack looks quite comfortable!

We have begun our new Unit of Inquiry, ‘Systems’. Our focus will be based on the central idea People change resources in order to satisfy needs and wants. We have tuned in by looking into natural and man made products, needs and wants and also procedural writing.

Grade 2 have started learning about money! In particular, counting money, different currencies, saving and spending and also calculating change. We will be moving onto co ordinates and chance in the coming weeks.

Last Friday we had the privilege of visiting the Grade 5 exhibition. We listened to the Grade 5 students tells us about some important issues such as fair trade, water supplies in 3rd world countries and gender equality.  Thank you for sharing your projects with us Grade 5. It was very interesting!

Ms. Austin and Mrs. Timmcke visited our class again this morning. We had a wonderful discussion on how to be good friends. Some of the actions we need to keep in mind are forgiveness, not talking behind someone’s back, helping and seeking out new friends (just to name a few). It was a positive way to start our week!

We are getting ready for the spring show! It is just over a week away, Wednesday 22nd 6:30pm. We have organised costumes using some of the costumes here at school. Students will need to wear a bright coloured top and jeans.

We hope you enjoy these snapshots of the past week!
