On our sites, we have a file size upload limit of 20 MB. Usually this is not a problem. But when it comes to sharing videos this size limit will often get in the way. That’s when you can reach for Handbrake.

Handbrake converts videos from one file format to another one. To publish a video on our sites, this is not really a concern because we can publish many different file formats. Allowed file formats include: wmv, mp4, m4a, mov, flp, avi, swf, wav and m4v. Most of our equipment, Flips and digital cameras, shoot mp4, avi, mov so we’re good to go there. The barrier tends to be file size. But Handbrake reduces file sizes too.

The trick is to set the target size to something less than 20 MB.

Five steps to reduce a video’s size with Handbrake

  1. Use the Source button to locate your movie.
  2. Identify a Destination for the optimized video. (I usually put them on the desktop.)
  3. Select your Output Settings.
  4. Set the Target size to something less than 20 MB.
  5. Press the Start button.

I find Handbrake to be fast and easy to use. It was easy to install and it’s free. If you are going to publish videos on your site, Handbrake will help you get it right.
